Sparks wrote one of his best-known stories, “The Notebook”, over a period of six months at age 28. It was published in 1996 by Warner Books. He followed with the novels:

Sparks and wife Cathy lived together in New Bern, North Carolina with their three sons, Miles, Ryan, and Landon; and twin daughters, Lexie and Savannah, until 2014. On January 6, 2015, Sparks announced that he and his wife had separated.
